Chain Link

This article was from the Boston Globe and write abouts Sound Scape and very cool sound art project . It lists Owen Curtin, sound engineer.

We need a wiki site but for now we have to just add our name to a page from the past. This link is to the wiki site for our historic cambridge recording studio

Just a few mentions of Owen's Recording work and other stuff on the web. This link is a review of review of a Avi and Celia record owen some mixing did last year at the mix hut. Mixed by Owen Curtin.

This next link is from a very old review that was also in the Northeast Performer back in 2002.

Doing the math and checking it twice

We hope to have diffusion very soon. This graphic was done in sketchup and represents 1/2 of a diffuser. We will use this patten 4 times to cover the rear wall of the control room. You have to flip every other half diffuser.

Retrospek in the Studio - Sleepwalker's Remedy coming soon!

Photobucket

Dorchester's finest boom bap collective, Retrospek, recently came through The Bridge to work on their upcoming debut, Sleepwalker's Remedy.

As always they were a pleasure to work with and hammered out one hip hop classic after another.

Be sure to be on the look out for Retrospek!

Popcorn and Candy

I'm working an a film today for Bella Rose Films. I always enjoy working with the exceptionally talented video editor Rebecca Gwynne . We are so glad that she uses The Bridge
This post production work is for the Tipping Point Foundation in San Francisco. They are a non-profit that enables real change and I have a lot of respect for.
This picture show my edit position at the production desk in the foreground. Beyond that you see the LCD and the console. In the back ground you can see the live room.

The studio is ideal for Post Production for Film and Video

Tracking with the Mutronics Mutator

The Mutator is a dual mono/stereo rack effects unit, boasting an amplitude follower with external key input, LFO and a VCF/VCA courtesy of an SSM 2045 on each channel. You can hear one squeaking and screeching over Johnny Greenwood's guitar at the end of Radiohead's "Paranoid Android." The filter is of the four pole, 24 db/octave lowpass flavor made famous by Dr. Robert Moog, but the 2045 also has a two pole, 12 db/octave lowpass that Mutronics elected not to use. We asked Tony Allgood of Oakley Sound Systems in the UK to tap the IC's two pole output and include a two/four pole toggle switch for each channel, and recently tracked a few sources through it at the Bridge.

First, we tracked a drum loop from Reason:

Then, we tracked sustained chords from Reason's "Maelstrom" synth, with its filters bypassed.

Finally, we convinced Owen to bust out his beautiful old bass and lay some stank down. The bass was tracked into Pro Tools through a Universal Audio 2-610 DI/pre. The first passes used the Mutator's amplitude follower to create an auto-wah/envelope filter effect:

The second passes used the Mutator's key input to trigger the envelope. We reused the dry drums and offset them by a quarter note for this effect:

This isn't Gearslutz, so we weren't especially concerned about matching volumes for comparison. The bright, fizzy character of the two pole filter, made famous by ARP and Oberheim in the 1970s, is apparent at any level. It can be a subtle difference, depending on the program material and filter settings, but it's a euphonic one, and both modes will likely see use at the Bridge.

Happy Good Friday,
So I got a call last night from The Holy Transfiguration Monastery to meet up and talk more about the recording they are doing. I was there last week with cuz Niall and we heard some amazing chanting. I think that this CD will be amazing. The timing and tuning is top notch. We also had a very nice lunch.

So I just noted that WFNX has this way to help you check out playlists with the youtube links

I have been listening to The Killers and The Cars and asking how they are connected in my mind. Still not sure but here is another track. Maybe you can sort it out.

And well the Raconteurs also fit in to this section of my mind but for no good reason at all. But what a good song right. I think it is cool maybe because the song is so good it can sell a fairly lame lyric.

Well as for other talk.. The new gear in the studio is like mixing glue! (Ah don't you love the sound of a false promise? It is so easy to elevate something by saying it does what you wish it could) But seriously, we made some amazing mix filling textures that you wil be hearing more of in the future.

Last but not least, our Cambridge studio is looking now for a Variac and a Hot Plate and I would love demo yours if you have one...

more then my brain can hold

So cousin Niall showed me this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SHHPFipk0A

Wiki Wiki Wiki

So we have always loved the stories we hear and the Boston music scene is full of great tails. For sure you can't through a stone in this town with out hitting a guitar player out or a recording studio and this makes for a lot of good music and and lot of folk lore. So for our recording studio to be rooted in the best of this history is realy something special. You see, The Bridge Sound & Stage happens to be a studio with a very rich history. Our recording stage once belonged to Fort Apache and in that time the stage has hosted names like David Bowie (buy the WBCN CD"), Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Infact on the CD "This is Fort Apache" you can hear this lineup!
Magnetic North Pole- Cold Water Flat
Not You Again- Dinosaur Jr
Star (Full Band Version)- Belly
Stove- The Lemonheads
Murdering Stone- The Walkabouts
Crutch- Buffalo Tom
Run Leter- Throwing Muses
The Freed Pigs- Sebadoh
Anyone Can Play Guitar- Radiohead
Here Comes The Pain- Juliana Hatfield
Sulk- Billy Bragg
I Think She Likes Me- Treat Her Right
Off To One Side- Come

Yeah it is nuts!

Notoreous Cuz with Santas Like Qualitys

Owen's cousin will roll in from from NYC and loan us a Fatso and a Mutator !!! And well... we don't know how we will ever thank him! We wish we could help him find a new home for his studio so he can get back to making amazing music. We will just have to hope that he moves to Boston and hangs out at The Bridge Sound and Stage.
